Project Coral Rescue achieved a successful launch of its marine science service learning program on August 12, 13 and 14, 2013 in the Upper Florida Keys. Fourteen marine studies high school students chosen by our partner schools, Coral Shores HS and Island Christian School, participated in both classroom and underwater study of Florida Keys coral reefs and associated fish populations. In addition to classroom discussion, students completed eight SCUBA dives with certified instructors in the Upper Keys over a two-day period, learning how to assess the health and condition of coral reef habitats and how to identify and count common fish species frequenting those reefs. Project Coral Rescue will continue to deliver real-world marine science service learning to our participating students through the remainder of the 2013-14 academic year. Congratulations to all of our wonderful students for a great start to an exciting year ahead!
